Patches of Memory In science, everything starts from an atom. Then, when several atoms merge together, it becomes a molecule. Then, when molecules merge as well, they eventually form an organelle. A group of organelle will then become a cell. A cell will become a tissue, then organ, until they form an organism. I used this sequence since this is where I can relate the art of Sir Ange Arthur-Koua which he introduced during the special session of our ARTS 1 class. Sir Ange would use different fabrics, i.e. clothes, used by different people to create art by combining several patches of fabric from those clothes to eventually form an artwork. I was amazed by his works since each image that was formed from the different patches of clothes are really vivid and clear. His inspiration in creating this type of art is amazing as well since he said that each piece of clothing holds the memories of the people who worn the said clothes.        Ever since I was a child, I fell in love with sports immediately. I would watch recorded sports videos from my Grandfather’s VHS tapes. From Michael Jordan’s Basketball heroics, up to Muhammad Ali’s intense boxing matches. I would also watch together with my father, Tiger Woods’ high energy in a seemingly meek game of golf. These moments during my childhood initially inspired me to become a well-renowned athlete someday. As I grow up, though, I had to face reality harshly. I realized that my body is weak—mainly because of asthma that is still my problem to this day. I thought that time that I would be estranged with sports after my realizations. However, several years later, I found my solace. One of my previous teachers told me that I should try writing for a school publication; and that is where my love for writing sports stories sprouted. Hidden Agendas   The art scene in the Philippines has grown significantly throughout the years. A huge part of this growth came from the establishment of different museums or art galleries that can be accessed by the people. One of these galleries is the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG)--which notably houses different donated artworks, including some art pieces procured by Filipino tycoons--that enables many people to see these artworks.  This concept map above shows how the concept of Cultural Capital works. The concept of Cultural Capital was introduced by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Cultural Capital is defined as the accumulation of skills, knowledge, and other characteristics of a person, which he/she can then utilize to show one's abilities and competence. As seen in the concept map, the privilege of a person and capital--i.e. the assets a person can tap into in order to enhance his/her own craft further--has a huge factor on what cultural capital a person will have. For example, a person born with a good birthright and social standing--possibly coming from the wealth of his/her parents, or even his/her lineage in general--will surely have an edge when it comes to accumulating skills and enhancing their craft compared to others since they will surely have better access to money and people who may help them to improve.
